X-rays and pictures of your teeth

We take 3 types of digital images (radiographs or x-rays) of your teeth. This allows the dentist to see problems beneath the surface of your teeth and skin such as:  tooth decay, abscesses, tumors, or any other abnormalities in your jaws.

o  Bitewing x-rays: With this image the doctor is able to identify cavities between the teeth that he couldn't otherwise see.  These types of cavities are popular among those that don't floss regularly.  This image should be taken every 6 months.

Notice the black (decay).  These teeth look fine from the outside, but the x-ray shows the decay below the surface.

o Periapical x-rays:  We'll take this image of any teeth that hurt.  With this image the doctor can see the tip of the root to identify an abscess or not.

Notice the small black arch above the root tip. This is an abscess (a bacterial colony).

o Panoramic x-ray:  With this image the doctor can see your entire jaw. This is beneficial to be able to see every root tip of all your teeth and rule out any existence of missing or extra teeth, tumors, abscesses, or cancers.  This image should be taken every 3-5 years and begin as early as 8 years old.  This is such an important radiograph because there are so many abnormalities that exist in the mouth that have no symptoms until it is usually too late.  If something is found small, chances of a good outcome are in your favor. See example below.

This patient didn't get her first panoramic x-ray until she was 14 years old!  Notice the missing teeth on the left side of the image and the tooth at the bottom left of her jaw causing quite a ruckus.  She had no symptoms of pain and it was a total surprise to her and her mom.  They had just thought she was missing teeth in that area.  If only thay had taken this image when she was 8, the problem would have been much smaller.

Digital x-rays provide instant images, minimal radiation, and easy consultation with specialists.

Examination

oOral Cancer Screening: The doctor will examine the skin in your mouth for any abnormalties.
oTeeth: He will then examine every tooth and discuss concerns with you.
oGums: He will then determine the health of your gums and discuss its relevance.

    Treatment Planning

Once all your information is gathered, it will be entered into the computer.  You and the doctor can now discuss areas of concern, treatment options, pros and cons of each, and our recommendations.

      Cleaning

o Depending on the health of your gums, he will decide the type of teeth cleaning you will need.  If your mouth exhibits large amounts of tartar your cleaning may take more than one appointment, and you will be scheduled to come back to finish your cleaning.
o After the cleaning, your teeth will be polished and a topical fluoride will be placed on your teeth to strengthen the chemical structure and guard them from decay.

      Finances and Scheduling
